Habitat House

College Hills has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Wilson County for twelve weeks this Fall to build a home for the Carter family here in Lebanon.

Work began on September 9 and construction was completed on November 25!

  Habitat House Dedication

In just 12 short weeks and about 1,500 volunteer hours, an empty plot of land was tranformed into a finished house ready for the Carter Family to call home.  The Dedication Ceremony was held at the College Hills Church of Christ on Sunday, November 26, 2006 during morning worship services.

We rejoice with the Carters and welcome them to the Lebanon community.

Below is a week by week summary of the work done on the Habitat House and links to pictures that were taken on workdays.

Over twenty five people from the Lebanon community, including a team of 20 from College Hills, the homeowner and Habitat coordinators, worked together to construct the floor joists, decking, and some of the exterior walls during the first work day.

With week 2 complete, all exterior and most interior walls are up!  Many skilled constrution folks from College Hills worked side by side with novice volunteers, the homeowner, and Habitat coordinators to finish the "shell" phase of the build.

Along with the official beginning of Fall, September 23 marked the third week of work on the Habitat House.  Despite the wind and rainy start, much was accomplished: Roof trusses were put into place, some of the roof decking was installed, and the exterior wall sheathing was put into place.

Volunteers from Dell Computers worked with the College Hills Church & Habitat crews during this 4th week.  It was exciting to see all of the inside walls become squared, completed and prepped for drywall; roof decking and tar paper is ready for shingles; and the front porch roof was installed.

What a joy it was to work together on this beautiful Fall day!   During week 5, windows and doors were installed, siding work was started, rough plumbing was finished, and some of the bathroom fixtures were put in.

Week 6 saw the completion of the siding and rear deck; the electrical wires are pulled and ready for inspection; and the work on the sofits has begun.  Everything is coming together wonderfully and on schedule!

During weeks 7-12 a lot of detail work was done, including sofits, porch stairs & railings and painting... lots of painting!  A great group of teens from Wilson Central High School worked along side College Hills volunteers during week 9.  What a blessing to have such spirit and enthusiasm on the build site! During week 11, the flooring, carpeting, bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances were installed.

In the final week, overall clean up was completed and a short walk through video was filmed.  An on site dedication was made on Saturday, November 25, then on Sunday, November 26 a formal dedication ceremony was held at the College Hills Church during morning services.

Also contributing to the overall project progress... a terrific group of Girl Scouts & College Hills ladies who have provided delicious lunches and drinks for the crew; and several College Hills teens & adult coordinators who have provided care for Habitat worker's children at the church building.

Thank you to ALL who have contributed to the work of building this new Habitat home.
