MINISTER TO THOSE IN NEED

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

  • Carl Manning Compassion Center  From 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays we give food to families who have lost their jobs or are in other dire circumstances. We have twelve volunteers who work once every three months. Contact Kim Carver .
  • Community Care  People within our community come to us by appointment from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays seeking financial assistance. We counsel, suggest educational and job opportunities, and then provide financial help from our budgeted funds.  Monica Duvall, Ann Dyal, and Joree Dudley currently serve in this ministry.
  • Pregnancy Help Center   High risk mothers are assisted with encouragement and baby items on Wednesday evenings. Call Kim Carver for more information.
  • School Store Ministry   Jim & Annabelle Robinson lead the annual School Store giveaway on the Saturday morning before the first full day of school. They collect school supplies and backpacks for children in our city and county schools, grades pre-K – 8. Linda McDowell and Anita Farmer collect new and used school clothes. Workers are needed for numerous activities, especially during the weeks prior to School Store and on event day.

HEARTHSIDE:
  • Hearthside Birthday Parties  College Hills ladies host a party at Hearthside the third Thursday of each month to celebrate birthdays of residents. Contact Justina Lawrence if you could help.

DEVELOP ALL TO BE CHRIST-LIKE

ADULT GROWTH & SPIRITUAL FORMATION:

  • Baby Sitting  On occasion there are special classes and seminars that some parents would like to attend but they are unable to arrange or afford childcare. Trustworthy adults who love children are needed. Times might be on a week night, just before or after services, or on a Saturday. We need a leader for this ministry; until then contact John Grant.
  • Ladies Prayer and Planning Day   This is an annual day to seek God’s guidance, fellowship, and plan our ministries for the coming year. These couple of hours will offer time for prayer, fellowship and food, reading and hearing about the College Hills Ministries, and meeting the leaders of each ministry. Each year our circumstances in life change—this day will afford each lady an opportunity to continue or change her area of service.
  • Prayer Services  Anne Donnell and Jane Hundley currently plan and coordinate special prayer services for people, as there is need. The coordinators set a date and time in line with the schedule of friends and family. They also publicize, invite those close to the person, write and distribute a short program of Scripture and prayer, provide a registry of people present, and greet those who come.
  • Scripture and Hymn E-mail  Anne Donnell provides a daily devotional e-mailed to all who request it. It contains a Scripture, words to a hymn, and a link to the hymn music. The devotion is in memory of Dr. Scott Robinson and Marilyn Smith. Sign up by notifying Anne Donnell. Help is needed during vacations.
  • Tuesday Morning Ladies Bible Class   Ladies of the congregation meet at 10 a.m. Tuesdays from September – May for one hour. We use a scriptural-based book and the Bible in our study together. Contact Martha Katzenmiller for more information.
  • Wednesday Night Prayer Class  Weekly sessions to pray and send cards to those for whom we’ve prayed. Troy Putman is the leader; but many women are currently involved and more are always needed and welcome. Contact Charles Morgan for more information.

PRAISE AND WORSHIP:

  • Communion Preparation Before each Sunday morning, over 1000 cups are filled with grape juice in preparation for communion. Volunteers come on a weekly rotating basis and most find that an hour and a half is plenty of time to serve in this important ministry. Please contact Jennifer Lewis if you can help in this area.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY:

  • Head Start Children’s Christmas This is an annual party for children who have qualified as low income. A toy and sweat suit are given to each child. Santa and a magician make an appearance too. See Susan Jackson for how you can participate in this ministry.
  • Nursery Workers  Contact Carol Locke if you would like to volunteer for one month of keeping our babies (birth to age two) on Sunday mornings during our worship service. Each of our three nursery rooms has a TV monitor so you can be part of our service while you rock and play. Nine caring ladies are needed each month. It’s a great way to get to know our new moms and grandmas.
  • Quiet Bag Ministry This ministry, led by Rhonda Eley, assists our members and guests with small children by providing bags with crayons, coloring and reading books, paper activities, stickers, and other similar items for entertaining young children during our worship services. These bags need to be straightened and refilled weekly and can be done any time the church building is open. If two people work together, it usually takes about an hour.
  • Substitute Teachers Our children’s Bible class teachers occasionally are absent and need a substitute. We are looking for people who would substitute in a class as a teacher or as an assistant. You can name your preference for Sunday morning or Wednesday night and for age level. And you will be blessed by sharing in this ministry. Contact Carol Locke for more information.
  • Tutoring  After school tutoring helps children for whom English is a second or third language. We meet at 3:30 on Monday afternoons when school is in session. Contact Cindy Spickard to find out how you can help.

CHURCH FAMILY CARE

FELLOWSHIP:

  • Fellowship Meal Ministry   Fellowship Meals, usually on Sunday evenings, are intended to develop and enrich the loving relationships within our church family. Our goal is to utilize various leaders and crews for each of the planned events. Contact Elisabeth Dyal if you would be willing to help.
  • Martha’s Kitchen   In the spirit of serving like Martha, the Fellowship Ministry is looking to initiate a program to help with the upkeep of our reception room kitchen. It would involve 2-3 ladies willing to do a check of inventory and clean any overlooked messes one day a month. Regular usage of the room involves its own cleanup, but a regular check-up would really help. Any willing "Martha’s" please contact Pam Thorne.
  • Poinsettia Project   We have a tradition of decorating College Hills each Christmas with poinsettias. The poinsettias may be purchased as a memorial or an honorary tribute by individual members. There is a need for a leader in this effort. It involves keeping the records of those purchased and overseeing their care through the season. The plants are available to be taken by those donors or honorees the last Sunday before Christmas.
  • Shower Ministry  This ministry is responsible for hosting showers to honor our brides/grooms and mothers-to-be. The showers are typically held on Sunday afternoons prior to evening services. Hostesses provide food and hospitality, and volunteer via the coordinators and sign-up sheets. Bridal coordinator is Sue Joyce Lester; Baby Shower coordinator is Angie Casto.

SPECIAL GROUPS:

  • Deaf Ministry  Worshiping and commumicating through Sign Language. Someone from the Deaf Ministry interprets each Sunday service and various Sunday morning and Wednesday night classes.
  • Primetimers  The College Hills senior citizen group was started about 20 years ago by Norman and Cricket Henry. They wanted to give our older members a way to have activities together and the "Primetimers" were born. Gary and Elaine McQuown currently lead this lively group on monthly trips and activities.
  • Women’s Ministry   The purpose of our ministry is to involve every Christian sister at College Hills in the work of the Lord. We wish to develop stronger relationships between the sisters as we work and play together. Prior years’ activities include our Women’s Retreat and group activities such as Hobby Night, which is hosted by Chris Bradford. This ministry is in need of a leader.
  • Secret Sisters  is a special ministry that helps connect the young ladies in YouthReach with the adult women in our church family.  Secret Sisters are randomly paired up, and for 2 months in the Spring, the adult will leave encouraging notes and gifts for their YouthReach sister each Sunday and throughout the week.  The Secret Sisters are then finally revealed at a special tea/luncheon. See Chris Bradford for more details.

CARE:

  • Fruit Plates  Every December (typically 1st or 2nd Thursday) members from College Hills are involved in a Christmas Fruit Plate ministry. Baskets of fruit and homemade goodies are given to our homebound members and many others in the community. Volunteers are needed to make goodies for the baskets and to assemble and deliver them. Contact Andrea Altman for more information.
  • Mary Waller Ministry  Anne Donnell leads a group of ladies in Bible study and singing at Hearthside and Lebanon Health and Rehabilitation (formerly Mariner) every Tuesday morning (10-12). More women are needed to visit with the people who attend the Bible study each week, provide leader transportation, and share in leading hymns.
  • Meals-in-Time-of-Need  This ministry offers a meal to our church families who have lost an immediate family member, or to the family of our member who has passed away. A hot, home-cooked menu is served in our reception room following the funeral services. Four teams are in place to host these meals on a rotating basis.
  • Young at Heart  One of our ministries developed  to work with caring for people in our church family has been “Young at Heart.”  A group of our ladies watch out for our members who are no longer able to be out. Bettye Moore designed birthday baskets that are delivered by these ladies.  This ministry is in need of a leader.
