Misc information:
-We normally have a canoe trip once a year if the Scouts choose this activity as one they would like to attend.
-Total distance on this canoe trip will be 25 miles
-The camp has very nice shower facilities and hot water is sometimes available
-You will be expected to shower each day as with any trip
-There will be a rope swing along the way at some point usually on Sunday
-We prefer one experienced scout with each new scout for safety.  We are more than happy to assign seating if this can not be naturally arranged.
-If you are a leader signed up with the scouts it would be very helpful if you would complete the Safety-a-Float and Swim Defense online.  The training link is below.
https://myscouting.scouting.org - Training cam be completed without a boyscout id but it will not be saved in the system

-Please note:  It is extremely likely that your canoe will fall over in many fun ways.  If for some reason your canoe does not tip over you are encouraged to randomly tip your canoe after lunch just for fun.
-NO SMOKING near scouts.  If you must smoke then please do so privately away from the scouts.

Adult Leader Training:
-Youth Protection training is required for all adult volunteers.  This training takes 15 minutes and is available at the same location.

Merit Badge Information:
Our main focus is the canoe merit badge.  We should be able to complete this merit badge during the canoe trip weekend.

General Information about Grimes:
The following is taken from a pdf at the following location:
http://www.troop137.com/pdf/grimes.pdf

The River:
The Buffalo River is a Class I & II
river located approximately 1.5 hours southwest
of Nashville, Tennessee. Trips on the Buffalo
River can last from two hours to five days.
The current is slightly faster than the Harpeth,
and it has more strainers. The Buffalo has
some riffles, but none that should cause any
problems. If Scouts bunch up, they are more
likely to tip the canoes over. Even though the
river is fairly easy to canoe, younger Scouts
may need some prior instruction before the trip.

Typical Trip:
Scouts camp at Grimes Canoe Base on Friday night.
Early Saturday morning, the troop is loaded into vans and taken
to the put-in upstream of Grimes Canoe Base. The Scouts
spend most of the day on the river and eat lunch on the river.
The troop takes out at Grimes Canoe Base and spends the
evening in camp before packing up and leaving on Sunday
morning.

Canoe Base:
Grimes Canoe Base is owned by the
Middle Tennessee Council and operated by Mr.
Wayne Hamm. Grimes is an excellent place to
camp. The canoe base provides tents similar
to those found at Boxwell Scout Reservation.
The tents are two person wall tents on wooden
platforms with cots inside. Scouts may bring
their own tents if they prefer. Grimes Canoe
Base also sells t-shirts, patches, and
consumables at the trading post. Mr. Hamm
will help schedule trips for a troop so that Scouts’
needs are best met. If a troop plans an extended
trip, Mr. Hamm will work with the Scoutmaster
to determine the best camping spots along the
river.
