Faith Next Door
September 18 - October 30
leading up to
Overflow Sunday on November 6

This sermon series, Faith Next Door, is designed to prepare us for “Overflow Sunday.”  When faith becomes a vibrant reality at home we feel the need to go “next door.”  The Gospel always has an outward and upward pull.  One of Kevin's favorite quotes comes from Erwin McManus who says, “We all too often think the church is here for us.  In truth we are the church and we are here for the world!”  That in a nutshell is what we want this series to proclaim.

September 18  /files/Images/Event Graphics/listen icon only.jpgCome and See, Go and Tell    Matthew 28:1-10.
In the familiar resurrection story, we will look at what the angels said to the women at the tomb.  In Mathew 28:6 they are told, “Come and See.”  That’s in essence what we are all told: come and see.  We find this invitation all through the ministry of Jesus.  The women then hurried away armed with the incredible news of the empty tomb and they are told by Jesus to “Go and tell.”  The two refrains Come and See and Go and Tell will set the stage for the rest of the messages in this series.  We are to come and see but not stop there.  That’s often what we do.  We are to then go and tell.

September 25 - A Church that Makes a Difference    Luke 4:14-21
This is an interesting passage as it is Jesus' first sermon in his hometown.  He comes announcing the year of Jubilee.  This was supposed to occur in Israel every fifty years but in fact it never happened.  When Jesus came he announced Jubilee has in fact now occurred.  This passage really is the outline for the ministry of Jesus found in the Gospel of Luke.  Jesus preached good news to the poor, freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight to the blind, etc.  As we develop a faith that goes next door, the things that are on Jesus' heart will also be on ours.

October 2  /files/Images/Event Graphics/listen icon only.jpgGoing Next Door    Luke 5:17-26
This is an interesting passage about some guys who do all they can to get their friend to Jesus.  While Jesus is still preaching he sees a hole in the roof develop and then he sees the paralyzed man lowered in his midst.  At this point scripture says in verse 5 that Jesus “saw” their faith.  What did he see?  What should he see in us?  How interested are we in getting our friends into the presence of Jesus.  The paralyzed man’s friends would not stop until they got him into the presence of the one who could truly make a difference.

October 9  /files/Images/Event Graphics/listen icon only.jpgThe Other Side of Transformation  Mark 5:1-20
Wilson McCoy will be speaking about this powerful story of transformation and change.  It is also about the power of Jesus.  The man is graphically depicted as someone who is out of control.  He lived in the tombs and chains were not strong enough to bind him.  No one was strong enough to subdue him.  He even cut himself with stones.  And yet when he comes into Jesus’ presence he falls to his feet.  When Jesus asks his name he says “My name is Legion for we are many.”  A Roman legion was composed of as many as 6000 soldiers.  Even though this man was filled with not one but thousands of demons they knew Jesus power.  They sought Jesus’ permission to go among the pigs.  Jesus' power is awesome and unmatched.  We go next door in the power of Jesus.

October 16  /files/Images/Event Graphics/listen icon only.jpg2X2   Luke 10:1-23
In Luke we read that Jesus disciples had been ministering with him but now Jesus sends them out ahead of him to minister in his name.  As we think about taking our “Faith Next Door”, what can we learn from Jesus and his disciples?

October 23  /files/Images/Event Graphics/listen icon only.jpgCome to the Table   Luke 14:1-14
In this interesting section of scripture, Jesus overturns the worlds values.  He is constantly doing this in the Gospels.  He says things like, “You want to be first, go to the back of the line.  You want to be the greatest, become the least.  You want to rule, try serving.”  In this passage Jesus is invited into the home of an arch-Pharisee and he ends up telling them a story that turns everything upside down.  In this passage we will see that genuine humility works itself out in hospitality.  This will have strong implications for us as we develop a faith that goes next door.
